San Pasqual and Francie
This is San Pasqual, the patron saint of cooks and kitchens. He has his firewood for the cookfire, fishes on a string, and a flask of wine at his belt. A loaf of bread is balanced in his hand.
With saintly devotion and pious eyes, he stands vigil in our new kitchen.
This little wooden sculpture was a closing gift from our realtor. We had such a good experience with her from the very beginning - she was a dream to work with. Francie was chatty and friendly and while she seemed to do all the talking all the time and never solicited much from us, she had an uncanny ability to intuit exactly what we wanted and what was right for us.
Without asking, she zeroed in on the fact that Jim was a cook and she understood what he wanted in a kitchen.
She specifically picked San Pasqual for his gray beard, which she thought was "appropriate" for Jim.
Through this home buying experience Francie has been a guide, a friend and a wonderful introduction to Santa Fe. She comes from old family here -- she grew up here when Santa Fe was a poky sleepy town. Her Dad developed most of the city in the 1970s, she herself owns properties all over town, and she is married to the grandson of a former governor. The main street that our development connects to is named for him.
With a long history here, enthusiasm for the city, and a bubbly personality, she hit everything we wanted from a realtor. She was a really sharp negotiator and very detailed -- nothing escaped her. She has invited us to dinner at her house with her husband next week and I'm looking forward to socializing with her. She's fun to be around . . . and an avid gardener too.
What impressed me throughout was the amount of time she spent with us, unstintingly, beginning with us as random long-shots from back east looking at properties we couldn't afford in areas we couldn't live in.
She took us to see them all, guided us when needed, and here we are happily in our new home, under the doleful eyes of San Pasqual of the Kitchen.
