Owls in the Wind
Spring is windy and dry in Santa Fe. Dust blows. It's sunny and the temperatures are mild, but the wind blows.
A family of stone owls hides out from the wind under the shrubs in the back yard. They came with us from Connecticut and still can't understand how they wound up in a place where there's never any snow for blankets in the winter, and there's nothing to drink anywhere.
But they don't complain.

For whatever reason I was never an "English garden" fan and I chafed with my old garden group when they wanted to read about and tour so many English style places. Yes they are lovely and I incorporated much of the English style in my attempts, but even tho I saw the appeal, I always wanted something less claustrophobically green, less fussy and less country estate looking. But I don't want cacti and palms either, so Santa Fe's montane dry upland forest look is great for me.
I look forward to reading about your gardens in Provence when you do finally retire there : ) I'll expect lots of lavender. . . . and no lawn.
I am glad you like the dry upland forest - I wasn't sure! My brother Kim wants to move to Taos so that is why your move caught my attention. I just think the lack of falling rain and wet would get to me - I love playing with the hose - I know - irresponsible in this era - but I can't help myself!! My brother has a whole southwest greenhouse and his wife a tropicals/orchid greenhouse attached to the house. They use to visit in NM every summer and come back with southwestern treasures and succulents. He made me stop work on the blog about his garden - sadly! I hear the winds in Provence (the mistral) are wicked so maybe I will stay in VA! Anyway I love living vicariously through your exploits!
