Owls in the Wind

Spring is windy and dry in Santa Fe. Dust blows. It's sunny and the temperatures are mild, but the wind blows.

A family of stone owls hides out from the wind under the shrubs in the back yard. They came with us from Connecticut and still can't understand how they wound up in a place where there's never any snow for blankets in the winter, and there's nothing to drink anywhere.

But they don't complain.

I do. I complain. It's windy here in April.

I love the owls!! They are sheltering - just like the rest of us! I am in Charlottesville VA and the winds have been huge - it seems like I am forever picking on limbs. I hate gardening in the wind. What a year - one baby step forward and then a giant leap backwards!! A few mild days with sun and now we are below freezing at night and expecting snow - TWICE - next week! I don't know you but worry for you ;-) as one east coast gal to another. I too have always dreamed of going to a hot dry area - more like Provence or the Greek isles. But I absolutely love the green - I identified with your grass post because I love a nice lawn with *nice* being the operative word. It is hard here in VA as we have lots of invasive bermuda grass. I feel like a green lawn gives the eye somewhere to linger. My brother 2 hours west has no lawn - I will include a link to some of his pics. I love all his stonework - but I also feel like my eye is constantly moving. In all honesty - I am a English country person - with broad swaths of green. But the world is changing too rapidly and the English green is getting hard to find with these new weather patterns. Here is a small site I was putting together for my brother Kim and his wife Mary about their garden: https://stonewoodgarden.wordpress.com/

Stonewood Garden is truly awesome! What a beautiful place Kim and Mary created. Please, please do more posts, I am sure there is still much to see of their gardens evolving and I'd love to see it!!
For whatever reason I was never an "English garden" fan and I chafed with my old garden group when they wanted to read about and tour so many English style places. Yes they are lovely and I incorporated much of the English style in my attempts, but even tho I saw the appeal, I always wanted something less claustrophobically green, less fussy and less country estate looking. But I don't want cacti and palms either, so Santa Fe's montane dry upland forest look is great for me.
I look forward to reading about your gardens in Provence when you do finally retire there : ) I'll expect lots of lavender. . . . and no lawn.

My brother Kim loves New Mexico and they always threaten to move there - so that is why your move there caught my eye. Plus - he has one whole greenhouse that is just succulents and Mary has a whole orchid/tropicals greenhouse attached to the house. I am glad to hear that you do like dry upland forest - I wasn't sure!! I often get grumpy feeling when it doesn't rain - like my body is waiting to exhale - so I am honestly not sure I could live where there is so little rain. I guess the blue skies make up for it. I remembering visiting another brother in Colorado ans was shocked when I saw all his gardening tools hanging up outside!! No rain = no rust! I always enjoy your posts. My brother Kim made me stop the blog about his garden - family!! ;-0

Well I just lost a long reply - sorry!!

I am glad you like the dry upland forest - I wasn't sure! My brother Kim wants to move to Taos so that is why your move caught my attention. I just think the lack of falling rain and wet would get to me - I love playing with the hose - I know - irresponsible in this era - but I can't help myself!! My brother has a whole southwest greenhouse and his wife a tropicals/orchid greenhouse attached to the house. They use to visit in NM every summer and come back with southwestern treasures and succulents. He made me stop work on the blog about his garden - sadly! I hear the winds in Provence (the mistral) are wicked so maybe I will stay in VA! Anyway I love living vicariously through your exploits!
