Southside Library

Santa Fe has three library branches, and the one closest to our house on the south side of the city is great. It's actually called the Southside library branch. It's a spacious building, well resourced and probably like your library in your town too.

My grandkids are coming this summer for their first visit to Grammy's house and if we're looking for things to do, a visit to the library is always a hit. Or I might just go before they arrive and take out some children's books to have at the house to entertain them.

The 18 month old loves flipping through his cardboard books and throwing them on the floor when he's finished, and the 4½ year old is actually sounding out the early reader books. She's pretty impressive at it.

When I was at the library recently I figured I would take a look at the children's room in advance of their visit and see what they had. Of course it was a wonderful space, with all the books, activity tables, and a row of child-sized cushioned cubbies along the wall that a reader could climb into with a good book.

I wanted to be small enough to do that. It happened to be a dark rainy Monday morning when I was there, and spending an hour in a tiny little nook with a book would have been delightful.

Half of the books on the shelves were in Spanish and all the signs and posters and information were printed up in both English and Spanish. I got semi-fluent just being in that room with the simple signs in both languages, easy to read side by side.

I don't normally spend any time in the children's room of the library, so that was a fun thing for me. I don't know if we'll go when the grandkids visit, or if I'll just get a few books to have at the house for them, but I'm looking forward to another morning in the kids' room at the library.

When my grandchildren were young we practically lived at the library. From Story Hour each week when they were four to tween discussion groups of Caldecott winners…so enriching and vital to their lives as avid readers today.

I love that! Yes, libraries are great places to develop kids into readers and entertain them along the way.
