Rock Paper Scissors

I always like to see this exquisitely balanced sculpture standing by the side of the road when I'm driving home from some errand on Rodeo Road.

Rock Paper Scissors. It makes me smile every time I pass it. I wondered why it was there and who had put it in this strip of open public land between the sidewalk and some fences. It's about 7 feet tall.

I had to do some sleuthing to find out.

There is no plaque, no signage, nothing to indicate the artist or why it is even there or who put it there. The strip is kind of barren, with no landscaping and little tending, other than occasional mowing when the weeds get tall.

I did discover it's a sculpture by Kevin Box. He's a sculptor in Santa Fe who does huge origami folded paper installations in bronze. In addition to variations of rock paper scissors, he does lots of other pieces, and he exhibits on Canyon Road as well as all over the country.

Now I know who made the singular statue standing on the side of the road along a sidewalk strip south of town.

But what does it mean? Why is it there? I have questions.

Mostly, though, I just like to see it as I drive past. Maybe that's the only reason it is there.

It's there because it makes you smile. One smile from one person can make a difference.
