Morning Melancholy

In the morning I play music while I open the shades, make the coffee and survey the new day coming. I'm no music follower, never have been, but I like to listen to all kinds of songs.

Alexa plays selections for me. At first I chose peppy, upbeat good morning stuff. I tried bold classical instrumentals and rock tunes with bouncy beats. I experimented with cheerful music. You know, start the day with enthusiasm and energy.

In the end I ditched the happy and settled on a melancholy mood. I put together a list of plaintive songs and blues music.

I don't know why, but starting the day sorrowfully makes me ready to go forward. I do not feel down at all, I love my morning routine, I just sense that the sun is gathering the world's woes up and discharging them as it rises. Music in a mournful key suits that.

I play it softly since Jim is still asleep, so it's just a soothing background thrum as the coffee burbles and the paper is fetched.

No one posts their playlists on blogs anymore, it's so passe now. Actually no one blogs any more. But I'll share my list with 30 second samples, so perhaps you too can start your day quietly in a minor key.

(It's on Amazon Music -- this will play only a few seconds to preview it, not the whole song. But you can scroll and see the list of titles and performers.)

What? No marches to wake you up in the morning?

No marches! Just quiet melancholy and I'm good to go . . .
